Eat genetically modified foods will give birth to deformed offspring? Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: No

Chen Xiaoya: There is currently no evidence that the currently approved genetically modified foods are not safe for humans and animals.

If humans eat genetically modified foods, will they give birth to deformed offspring Chen Xiaoya, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said at the 15th Academician Meeting of the Chinese Academy of Sciences: “No!”

Chen Xiaoya said that there is currently no conclusive evidence that the currently approved genetically modified foods are not safe for humans and animals. However, any type of genetically modified organism must be strictly supervised. The problem of pest resistance to genetically modified crops, possible genetic drift of genetically modified plants and the resulting ecological security have not been rigorously confirmed or solved.

Chen Xiaoya said, “In the past 30 years, scientists have successfully cultivated a variety of transgenic plants and animals. As an experimental method, transgenic technology has long been widely used in various fields of life science research. In agriculture, genetic modification technology has greatly improved. The ability and efficiency of biological breeding."

He introduced that "breeding and industrialization of genetically modified organisms" is one of the sixteen major scientific and technological special projects initiated during the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" period in China. At present, the industrialization of genetically modified crops in China has developed rapidly. Since its commercialization for the first time in 1996, it has become the fastest utilized crop breeding technology in modern agricultural history. In 2009, China planted 3.7 million hectares of genetically modified crops, ranking sixth in the world, including cotton (16640, 155.00, 0.94%), poplars, tomatoes, papaya, and sweet peppers. These crops produced or enhanced insect resistance, Disease resistance, high yield, high quality and other characteristics have played a good economic and ecological benefits in agricultural production.

Chen Xiaoya stated that we should adopt a scientific approach to objectively treat genetically modified technologies and fully analyze the possible effects of some target genes. On the basis of establishing and improving relevant laws and regulations, we should increase scientific propaganda to increase public recognition and acceptance of genetically modified technologies so as to further promote the research and development of genetically modified technologies so that they can better serve the socio-economic and people's health. .
