World trade barriers create high barriers to China's ceramic exports

A few days ago, the Ministry of Commerce website announced the final ruling on the anti-dumping investigation of Chinese ceramic tableware products issued by the Indonesian Anti-Dumping Committee, and proposed to impose an anti-dumping duty of 87% on some products. Previously, South Korea, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and other countries have set up trade barriers for China's ceramic industry. Wang Shouwen, director of the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce, said at the end of 2011 that in 2012, "China's export situation was relatively severe." In January of this year, this statement was confirmed. The total domestic exports showed the first negative growth since December 2009, and the export volume of Foshan ceramics decreased by 10.9%. Guangdong ceramics exports fell by 15.6% from the previous month . Guangdong Province is China's largest ceramics production and export base. Ceramic exports have maintained rapid growth for many years. However, according to customs statistics, in January 2012, Guangdong exported 490 million US dollars of various ceramic products, a decrease of 5.9% compared with the same period of last year, of which 97.8% was exported by general trade. In January of this year, the export characteristics of Guangdong ceramics were obvious. Affected by the Spring Festival holiday, the export volume in January dropped slightly. After December 2011, when the monthly export history reached a new high of 580 million US dollars since 2006, the export volume of Guangdong ceramics in the first month of 2012 decreased by 15.6%. Among the exported products, ceramic tiles are the main export varieties. In January of this year, Guangdong exported 270 million US dollars of ceramic tiles, down 7.2%, accounting for 54.4% of the total value of Guangdong ceramics exports; exports of porcelain tableware, kitchen utensils and other household or washing porcelain 130 million US dollars, an increase of 5%, accounting for the same period 26% of Guangdong's ceramic exports. The EU, ASEAN, Latin America and the United States are still the main export markets. Guangdong exports ceramics to the EU of US$80.01 million, down 16.9%; exports to ASEAN, Latin America and the United States reached US$64.28 million, US$54.8 million and US$46.85 million, down 3.4% respectively. 6% and 8%. In addition, exports to India reached 23.94 million US dollars, an increase of 33.5%. In January this year, private enterprises in Guangdong exported 350 million US dollars of ceramics, down 4%, accounting for 72.6% of the total value of ceramics exported in Guangdong during the same period. In addition, foreign-invested enterprises exported 82.4 million US dollars, down 10.5%, accounting for 16.9%. Guangdong's export enterprises are mainly in Foshan, Shenzhen and Chaozhou. Foshan exports ceramics 200 million US dollars, down 7.2%, accounting for 40% of Guangdong's total export ceramics; Shenzhen exports 110 million US dollars, down 10.7%, accounting for 10.7% In the same period, the total value of ceramics exported from Guangdong was 22.5%; the export of Chaozhou was US$85.3 million, down 1.8%, accounting for 17.5% of the total value of ceramics exported in Guangdong during the same period. Ceramic exports encounter multiple obstacles From the statistics of customs and the characteristics of Guangdong ceramic exports in January, it can be seen that the export situation of China's ceramics in 2012 is not optimistic. The subsequent anti-dumping, the appreciation of the renminbi to the profit of enterprises and the added value of export commodities themselves have become huge obstacles for China's ceramic exports. The continued downturn in the European and American economies has led to a growing trend of trade protectionism worldwide. It is reported that since 2009, Chinese ceramic tiles have been subject to anti-dumping investigations in Southeast Asia, South Korea, the European Union, South America and other countries and regions, and are becoming more frequent. The continued appreciation of the renminbi against the US dollar has led to a weakening of the price advantage of ceramic exports, and profits have been squeezed again. According to industry experts, the anti-dumping investigation against Chinese ceramic products came directly from the low-cost model of the development of the domestic ceramic industry. The added value of ceramic export commodities is low, and it is easy to form low-price competition. It is understood that in addition to a few large enterprises, many export ceramics enterprises in Guangdong have small scale R&D centers and weak R&D capabilities. Compared with ceramic products from developed countries such as Italy, they have low technological content and cannot enter the mid-to-high-end market. At the same time, many companies have weak brand awareness, no independent brands, and there are many phenomena in OEM production. Trade barriers forced the industry to transform and upgrade . The anti-dumping investigations and the turmoil at home and abroad have once shrouded the ceramic industry in a pessimistic atmosphere. It is undeniable that high barriers to trade are a heavy blow to the ceramic industry that is actively seeking to "go global." However, some industry experts said that the strict trade barriers will further force the transformation and upgrading of the domestic ceramic industry, and eventually move towards a free, fair, benign, orderly and honest competition track, forcing Chinese ceramic enterprises to upgrade to the high end of the industrial value chain. This year, the development of the ceramic industry is not optimistic and faces many challenges. However, from another perspective, the challenge is also an opportunity. The industry can seek new development models in the big challenges and find new ways to develop. Some entrepreneurs said that in 2012, under the environment of high barriers to trade and internal and external problems, it is possible to establish independent brands through product innovation and enhance the international competitiveness of products. In addition, the development of emerging markets and the advancement of anti-dumping countries and regions are also one of the ways to cope.
