Graphene "strategic" solves the problem of photocatalytic water and hydrogen production

The reporter learned from the China University of Science and Technology that the research team led by Prof. Luo Yi from the Hefei National Laboratory for Microscale Physical Sciences used the first-principles calculations to propose the first material system design for hydrogen storage and hydrogen storage by photolysis of water. With the advantages of low cost, versatility, and safe hydrogen storage, related results were recently published in Nature Communications.

The hydrogen energy economy was a "perfect" sustainable energy plan proposed in the 1970s. It was driven by the inexhaustible sunlight and split the water into hydrogen and oxygen.

In response to the problem of serious reverse reactions in hydrogen production from photolysis of water and difficulty in hydrogen separation and storage, the researchers have been inspired by previous research: graphene can block all gases and liquids, but it can “open the way” for protons. Generous release. Using this feature, a sandwich structure composed of two-dimensional carbon-nitrogen materials and graphene-based materials was designed.

In this sandwich structure system, the carbon-nitrogen material is sandwiched between two functional group-modified graphenes. First-principles calculations show that using solar energy to generate excitons, photoexcited excitons rapidly separate to form high-energy electrons and holes and migrate to intermediate carbon-nitrogen materials and outer graphene materials, respectively. The water molecules adsorbed on the active site of the graphene-based material are cleaved with the help of photogenerated holes and generate protons. The generated protons are driven by the built-in electrostatic field on the carbon-nitrogen material, which can penetrate the graphene material, move to the inner two-dimensional carbon-nitrogen material, and react to produce hydrogen after encountering electrons.

Since only the hydrogen atoms (protons) are released from graphene, the hydrogen produced by photolysis of water cannot penetrate the graphene material, resulting in hydrogen molecules produced by photolysis of water that will be safely retained in the sandwich composite system, inhibiting the reverse reaction. The occurrence of hydrogen storage safely achieved a high hydrogen storage rate.

This system, at a relatively low cost, subtly inhibited the occurrence of the reverse reaction of hydrogen production from photolysis of water and achieved effective purification of hydrogen. It will solve the two bottleneck problems of the most difficult hydrogen separation and safe storage and transportation for the large-scale application of hydrogen energy, and will open the door to restart the “Hydrogen Energy Economic Era”.
