Maintaining the interests of enterprises and promoting trade development Guangdong Metrology Institute assists in the identification of air cargo conditions for lithium batteries

Lithium batteries have been included in the “blacklist” of the air transport industry because of their special risks of flammability and explosiveness. Guangdong Institute of Metrology has focused on this issue and exerted its technical strength to carry out the identification of lithium battery cargo transportation conditions. The "Cargo Transportation Condition Appraisal Report" has been awarded by China International Airlines and China Southern Airlines, US UPS Cargo Airlines and German Lufthansa Cargo. Aviation and other 32 domestic and foreign airlines recognized.

As the world's ** lithium battery manufacturing base and the second largest exporter, China has a broad market space. In order to ensure air transportation safety and service export trade, Guangdong Metrology Institute has explored the simulation of aviation environment, improvement of detection capabilities, and integration of new international regulations.

During the 30-day inspection period, the Electromagnetic Laboratory of Guangdong Metrology Institute simulated various extreme situations and potential hazards that may occur during the navigation of the aircraft, and highly simulated large, medium and small-capacity lithium batteries such as batteries and energy storage batteries for portable electronic products. 8 technical tests such as thermal shock and mechanical shock and 1.2m drop test for packaging provide a basis for the identification of lithium batteries for safe transportation.

Lithium battery testing is performed on a model basis. Taking one of the thermal shock tests as an example, continuous 5 days of continuous testing is required. If each model is tested separately according to the conventional detection method, it takes time and consumes power. Guangdong Metrology Institute has improved the detection capability. Under the condition that the batteries do not affect each other, a number of batches are used for joint detection, and multi-channel and monitoring methods are adopted in the test acquisition and other projects, which improves the detection efficiency by twice. .

In recent years, the international regulations on the safe transportation of lithium batteries have been introduced one after another. The Guangdong Metrology Institute has updated the testing procedures in a timely manner to help enterprises actively respond and serve export trade. For example, the revised edition of the 58th edition of the Dangerous Goods Regulations, which was implemented by the International Aviation Association on January 1, 2017, puts more stringent requirements on the packaging materials and operation labels of different types of lithium batteries. The hospital responded promptly, provided technical guidance to the company in advance, guided the company to continuously improve the packaging label, and carried out tracking and rectification for key customers with large shipments, avoiding the situation of goods being stranded or returned due to packaging and label violations.

At present, the test report issued by the hospital has helped 1,139 lithium batteries of 305 companies such as BYD and Shenzhen Kunpeng, which are domestically produced, and safely and conveniently delivered to the United States, the European Union, the Middle East and other parts of the world. It has effectively safeguarded the interests of enterprises and promoted the development of trade.
