MIT creates a lower-cost "water sponge" steamer

With the development of natural gas and thermal appliances, there are not many people who insist on using firewood + kettles to boil water. However, a research project at MIT aimed to target this traditional steam acquisition method. According to foreign media reports, MIT engineers have invented a device that resembles a sponge and wrapped with a bubble film overwrap - simply throwing it under the sun can heat the water to boiling temperature. The most shocking thing is that it can be made from simple DIY materials.

George Ni, an MIT graduate student who participated in the project, said: “We have created a floating solar receiver that generates heat and heats water into steam. The novelty is that it does not require any optical focusing, such as a mirror or Lenses. Optical components are usually the bulk of the cost in solar thermal systems, and our receivers are expected to push solar thermal systems to more people."

The project started in 2014, but the latest design has made great progress. First of all, its temperature has reached 100°C (no need for any optical focusing); secondly, the new prototype was built with commercial materials (you can easily purchase it at a local decoration store).

George Ni said: “Cellular bubble wrap and thermal foam are all purchased from Home Depot, but we have an innovative approach that allows it to generate steam synergistically. Sewage treatment, medical device sterilization and other areas play a role."

They have built a low-cost, scalable platform, but before they are put into practical use, additional testing and development work is required.
