With an enemy three: Adjustable sub-pixels to triple the display resolution

Although the display market is being popularized from 1080p to 4K resolution, the desire of consumers for higher pixels is endless, and even manufacturers have started to develop 8K products. However, scientists at the University of Central Florida (UCF) have developed a new method to reduce each pixel to 1/3 of its size by using different voltages to change the color of a single subpixel to red (R) green ( G) Blue (B) color. In addition to bringing higher resolution, this technology can also significantly increase the brightness of the screen.

Although the computer uses the "pixel" as the minimum unit of the figure, on the display panel, each pixel actually corresponds to the sub-pixels of the three primary colors of red (R) green (G) blue (B). Then according to different combinations, different colors and brightness are presented.

The good news is that this set of "adjustable sub-pixel" technology developed by UCF researchers allows each sub-pixel to display three primary colors of R, G, and B, effectively increasing the resolution of the display. The paper one for DebashisChanda said:

"For example, we can make a red subpixel blue, but other monitors cannot. Because their R, G, B subpixels are static (fixed), they need to be combined to display a color. This is not the case with new technologies because each sub-pixel can be adjusted to other colors."

UCF newly developed this display technology, each sub-pixel size has reached the nano level, their shape is like a miniature egg box, coated on a layer of aluminum. By applying different voltages to this material, the sub-pixels can display different RGB spectra.

This means that each sub-pixel can be used as an ordinary pixel, which can easily triple the resolution of conventional panels, effectively increasing the potential resolution of the display. In addition, this new technology also improves color brightness:

When the traditional RGB display is displaying a solid color, it needs to turn off the other two sub-pixels. But if each sub-pixel can be lit at the same time, the brightness of the panel can obviously be improved a lot.

The researchers said that this technology can be easily deployed to the existing LCD production line, because the other parts of the hardware are exactly the same. For details of this study, read the recently published Nature Communications journal.
