Global plasticizer market turns green

IHS Chemical's research report shows that from 2014 to 2019, the annual growth rate of global plasticizer demand will reach 3.9%. By 2019, global plasticizer usage will rise to 10.3 million tons. Michael Malveda, senior principal analyst at IHS Chemicals, said that phthalate products still dominate the plasticizer market, but their market share is gradually declining. In 2014, global plasticizer consumption was 8.4 million tons, of which phthalates accounted for 70%. Compared with 88% in 2005, the proportion of phthalates has dropped sharply, and by 2019 this proportion will further drop to 65%.

The decline in market share of phthalates is mainly due to consumer concerns about health and safety. At the same time, global demand for non-phthalate substitutes is growing rapidly. These alternatives mainly include terephthalate, epoxy resin, aliphatic compounds (including hydrogenated phthalates) and benzoates. The average annual growth rate is expected to exceed 7% from 2014 to 2019. The volume will increase from 2.5 million tons in 2014 to 3.6 million tons in 2019. The average annual demand growth rate of terephthalate and epoxy resin plasticizers will reach 8.3% and 8%, respectively, which is equivalent to twice the annual average demand growth rate of plasticizers, and phthalates. The growth rate is more than three times.

According to analysis, in addition to GDP growth, the main factors affecting the global plasticizer market in the next five years include raw material and energy costs, availability of low-cost raw materials, and environmental regulations. Due to environmental regulations, the consumption of phthalate plasticizers will decline.

The most consumed of phthalate plasticizers is diisooctyl phthalate (DEHP). In 2014, global DEHP consumption reached 3.13 million tons, accounting for 53% of total phthalate plasticizer consumption and 37% of global plasticizer consumption. From 2014 to 2019, the annual growth rate of global DEHP consumption is expected to be only 2.2%, slightly lower than the average annual growth rate of phthalate plasticizer 2.4%, and significantly lower than non-phthalate increase. The average annual growth rate of plasticizers. From 2014 to 2019, DEHP consumption in the United States and Western Europe will decline at an average annual rate of 3.4% and 2.5%.

Many areas of the world are already limiting the use of DEHP, primarily for consideration of human health and environmental risks. As of February 21 this year, the EU has banned the use of DEHP in any production process unless approved by REACH. Arkema in France closed its 70,000 tonne/year DEHP capacity in 2013, marking the complete withdrawal of DEHP production in Western Europe. The proportion of DEHP's consumption of phthalate plasticizers in Western Europe has fallen sharply from 23% in 2008 to 5% in 2014.

The European Commission has recommended that plastics containing DEHP be recycled for use in new projects such as footwear and flooring, but the proposal has recently been rejected because the reproductive toxicity of DEHP threatens the health of workers exposed to such substances during production. Although the European Commission recommended the approval of recycling of PVC plastics containing DEHP under the REACH Law, the vote of the European Parliament is still not supported.

Plasticizer demand in Western Europe has shifted from low molecular weight phthalates to high molecular weight phthalates. The current high molecular weight phthalate plasticizers account for about 87% of the consumption of phthalate plasticizers in the region, which has been significantly higher than the 35% in 1998. Low molecular weight phthalate plasticizers such as DEHP, DBP and DIBP have been labeled as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) according to EU REACH regulations.

Michael Malveda said that since 2011, China has accounted for most of the global new plasticizer capacity and new consumption. At present, China's plasticizer market is also shifting to safe alternatives. According to IHS Chemistry, China accounted for 43% of global consumption in 2014, 16% in other parts of Asia, 14% in Western Europe and 12% in North America. By 2019, China's share of the global plasticizer market will increase to 48%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.5%.
