According to the Asia-Pacific International News Agency in India, a group of researchers is studying the use of natural fibers to make clothes that can use solar power. This clothing can be used to charge mobile phones, tablet computers, and GPS devices.
Two researchers from the Department of Design and Merchandising at the University of Colorado, Eulanda Sanders and Ajoy Sarkar, and their four students, are designing clothes that can be recharged using solar energy. This kind of clothing can be worn during cycling, skiing, or hiking.
According to news reports, there were previously garments with solar cells developed, but they are usually made from petroleum derivatives rather than natural fibers. The Sanders and Sarkar teams, on the other hand, hope to use cotton and linen, which are safe and strong, as raw materials.
The University of Colorado said that the research team was able to make natural materials stronger by transforming it. This will put the deformable solar cells into the garment. The team researched and developed this greener garment, aiming at not only making the solar garments more comfortable and beautiful, but also more functional and easier to clean.
Relying on the US $15,000 grant from the National Environmental Protection Agency, the research team has designed several solar charging jackets and a vest. This weekend, the apparel will be exhibited at the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Sustainable Design Exhibition in Washington.
